Five bizarre figures appear to be engaged in some kind of ritual, the point of which is impossible to discern. Three are skeletons dressed in black priestly robes, false rubber noses and long pointed cone hats with the letter 'H' stamped onto their front. They read soundless psalms from dusty old books at two figures opposite in red hooded robes both of whom are slightly bowed, perhaps in prayer, perhaps for a final time, as is suggested by their proximity to a seemingly bottomless black pit before them. Are they being punished? Are they engaged in an act of extreme faith? The colourless, blank space they are situated within offers no clues, and the protective symbols of a leather boot and ham leg that float above them in saintly manner only make the scene more confusing. Is there any less sense here than in the viewers own existence?
